Can Green and Blue Tattoos Be Removed? Pico Laser in Temecula

Why are green and blue tattoos harder to remove?

Laser tattoo removal works by matching a wavelength of light to the color of the ink. The ink absorbs that light, heats rapidly and breaks into smaller particles that the body can clear.

Black ink absorbs almost every wavelength, which is why it responds so well. Green and blue are different. Common green pigments absorb most strongly in the red part of the spectrum, roughly 620 to 750 nm, according to a 2022 study in Scientific Reports. A laser that isn’t in that range passes through much of the color without breaking it up. A 2012 study of patients treated with older Q-switched lasers, published in Archives of Dermatology, found that blue, green and yellow inks were more resistant to removal than black or red. Other factors also matter, including how much ink was used, whether the tattoo is a cover-up, its location and your skin type.

How pico lasers help with colored ink

Picosecond lasers deliver energy in trillionths of a second, far shorter than nanosecond lasers. That speed creates a strong pressure wave that shatters ink into much finer particles, which are easier for your immune system to remove.

For green and blue specifically, two things matter:

  1. The right wavelength. Red-range wavelengths target green and blue pigment directly.
  2. The right pulse speed. Shorter pulses break stubborn pigment into smaller fragments.

In a 2012 study in Archives of Dermatology, Brauer and colleagues treated 12 blue and green tattoos with a 755 nm picosecond laser. Eleven of the 12 were more than 75% cleared after one or two treatments, and about two-thirds approached complete clearance. A 2022 laboratory study also found that a picosecond Nd:YAG laser broke down green ink more completely than nanosecond lasers.

How many sessions does a green or blue tattoo need?

It varies. Green and blue often need more sessions than a similar black tattoo, especially in dense, professional work or cover-ups. Sessions are usually spaced about 8 weeks apart so your body can clear the broken-up ink. At your consultation, we’ll look at the colors, density and location and give you an honest estimate.

How to get the best results on colored ink

  • Choose a clinic with a pico laser and the right wavelengths for color. Ask which wavelengths they use for green and blue.
  • Respect the 8-week interval. A 2012 study linked spacing of at least 8 weeks to better results.
  • Don’t smoke. The same study found smokers were about 70% less likely to clear their tattoo within 10 sessions.
  • Protect the area from the sun and follow your aftercare. Read 6 research-backed ways to improve your results.

FAQ

Can green and blue tattoos be removed? Yes. Green and blue tattoos are harder to remove than black ink, but they can be treated with the right laser wavelengths. In a 2012 study, 11 of 12 blue and green tattoos treated with a picosecond laser were more than 75% cleared after one or two treatments.

What is the hardest tattoo color to remove? Blue, green and yellow are generally among the most resistant colors. Black absorbs laser energy most easily and is usually the easiest to remove.

Why is green ink hard to remove? Common green pigments absorb mostly red light, roughly 620 to 750 nm. Lasers outside that range break up less of the ink, so green needs specific wavelengths.

Is pico laser better for colored tattoos? Picosecond lasers deliver energy faster than older nanosecond lasers, breaking ink into finer particles. Studies have shown strong results on blue and green ink, though results depend on the device, the tattoo and the person.

How many sessions does it take to remove a green tattoo? It varies, and green often needs more sessions than a similar black tattoo. Sessions are typically spaced about 8 weeks apart, and a consultation can provide a personal estimate.
