We did the math on shaving
If you shave for about 10 minutes, 4 times a week:
10 minutes × 4 times a week × 52 weeks = about 35 hours a year
That’s nearly a full work week spent shaving every year. Over 10 years, it adds up to more than 14 days. And that doesn’t count razors, shaving cream, waxing appointments or razor burn. At Erase & Embrace in Temecula, that math is one of the most common reasons clients ask about laser hair removal. Here’s what to know before you start.
How does laser hair removal work?
The laser sends light energy into the skin, where it is absorbed by the pigment in the hair. That energy turns into heat and travels down to the hair follicle, damaging it so it produces less hair. The key detail is timing. A follicle can only be treated effectively during its active growth phase, called anagen. Since your hairs are all at different stages at any given time, each session catches a different group of follicles. That’s why laser hair removal is always a series, not a single appointment.
How many sessions will I need?
Most people need about 6 to 8 sessions, according to Cleveland Clinic, though some areas respond in fewer. After the first session, a 10% to 25% reduction in hair is typical. Sessions are usually spaced 4 to 8 weeks apart, depending on the body area. Areas like the face often grow back faster and may be treated more frequently than the legs or back.
Is laser hair removal permanent?
Not completely. Laser hair removal provides a long-term reduction. Many people go months or years with little to no regrowth, and the hair that does return is usually finer and lighter. Some people need occasional maintenance sessions to keep results.
Why fall is the best time to start
With 6 to 8 sessions spaced weeks apart, a full series can take 9 months or more. Starting in October puts you well into your series by the time swimsuit season comes back around. Fall timing also helps for another reason. Tanned skin raises the risk of side effects, and treated skin needs to be protected from the sun. Shorter, cooler days make both easier, even in Southern California.
Who is laser hair removal best for?
Laser hair removal works best when there is contrast between the hair and the skin, such as dark hair on lighter skin. It is not as effective on blonde, gray, white or red hair, which has little pigment for the laser to target. People with darker skin can often be treated safely with the right laser and careful settings. At your consultation, we’ll assess your skin and hair to set realistic expectations. Talk with us first if you are pregnant, take certain acne medications such as isotretinoin, have a history of cold sores, have keloid scarring or have had skin cancer.
How to prepare and what to expect
- Shave, don’t wax. Shave the area a day or two before your session. Stop waxing, plucking and tweezing once treatment begins, since the laser needs the root in place.
- Skip the tan. Avoid tanning beds, sunbathing and self-tanner for at least 2 weeks before each session.
- Afterward, mild redness and swelling are common and usually settle within 1 to 3 days. A cool compress helps.
- Protect your skin. Keep treated areas out of direct sun and use a broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher.
Most people go back to their normal day right after treatment.

FAQ
Is laser hair removal permanent? Laser hair removal provides long-term hair reduction, not permanent removal. Many people go months or years with little regrowth, and any hair that returns is usually finer and lighter. Some people need occasional maintenance sessions.
How many laser hair removal sessions do I need? Most people need about 6 to 8 sessions, spaced 4 to 8 weeks apart depending on the body area. A 10% to 25% reduction after the first session is typical.
When is the best time to start laser hair removal? Fall is ideal. A full series can take 9 months or more, so starting in fall means you are well into treatment by summer, and shorter days make sun avoidance easier.
Does laser hair removal hurt? Most people describe it as a quick snap or warm sting. Redness and mild swelling are common and usually settle within 1 to 3 days.
Can I shave before laser hair removal? Yes. You should shave the area a day or two before each session. Avoid waxing, plucking and tweezing once treatment begins, because the laser needs the hair root in place.
Does laser hair removal work on blonde, gray or red hair? It is usually less effective on blonde, gray, white or red hair, because these hairs have little pigment for the laser to target. A consultation can tell you what results to expect.
