This is one of the most common questions I hear in consultations. You have a tattoo you’re not happy with, maybe it’s outdated, maybe the execution didn’t turn out the way you hoped, maybe it’s tied to a chapter you’ve closed. And you’re sitting with this decision: do you cover it up, or do you remove it?
Both are legitimate options. Both work. And the right answer depends on specifics that I’ll walk you through here: location, size, ink colors, your goals, and your timeline.
The Case for a Cover-Up
A cover-up tattoo can be a beautiful, creative solution. The right artist can transform something you dislike into something you love, often using the original tattoo’s lines and shapes as part of the new design.
Cover-ups work best when:
- The original tattoo is relatively small and has some faded areas for the new ink to work with
- You still want to have a tattoo in that location
- You have a clear vision of what you want the cover-up to look like
- You want results faster: a cover-up can be done in one to a few sessions
The limitations of cover-ups:
- Cover-up designs must be larger and darker than the original tattoo. You can’t cover dark ink with light ink
- The original tattoo will always be ‘in’ the cover-up to some degree; it can show through over time as sun exposure over time will oxidize the ink
- There are design limitations. Your new tattoo has to work around what’s already there
- A poor cover-up can be harder to fix than the original
The Case for Laser Removal
Laser tattoo removal has improved significantly in the past decade. The Candela PicoWay laser, which we use at Erase & Embrace Tattoo Removal, is one of the most advanced systems available. It breaks up ink particles using picosecond pulses, which shatter ink even finer and with less heat damage to surrounding skin than older Q-switched lasers.
Laser tattoo removal is the better choice when:
- You want the tattoo completely gone; no replacement, just clear skin
- The tattoo is in a location you want to be ink-free (hands, neck, face, forearm in a professional setting)
- The tattoo has colors that a cover-up artist couldn’t work over effectively (bright yellows, greens, light blues)
- You want a clean slate before committing to a new tattoo design
- The tattoo is large and a cover-up would require an even larger, darker piece you don’t want
What laser tattoo removal can realistically achieve:
Most tattoos can be significantly faded or fully removed with a proper series of sessions. The number of sessions depends on the tattoo’s age, ink colors, depth, size, your skin tone, and how your immune system clears the fragmented ink particles.
- Black and dark grey ink: typically responds fastest: 8-10 sessions for significant fading or complete removal
- Dark blue and green: responds well with the right laser. PicoWay handles these better than older systems
- Red, orange, yellow, and lighter colors: take longer and may require more sessions but PicoWay is significantly more effective on these colors than alternatives
- Professionally applied tattoos: take longer than amateur ink because they’re typically denser
Questions to Ask Yourself
- Do I want to have a tattoo in this location at all?
- Am I willing to wait 12–18 months for full removal versus getting a cover-up sooner?
- Is there a design I love enough to commit to as a cover-up?
- Does the location affect my professional life in a way that needs addressing?
- What’s my budget and timeline?
